HILL SKILLS 1

On-Path

Practical 1-day course for beginners who want to navigate following footpaths and marked paths with confidence. For upcoming dates click here.

You will learn:

  • what is on an Ordnance Survey map and what it means

  • how a compass works

  • simple strategies to keep track of where you are and where you're going

  • information about what to carry and how to stay safe or call for help

  • Introduction to Leave no Trace and Countryside Code

SUITABLE FOR    Beginners; countryside walking on paths; classic guidebook style walks; Wainwright baggers; charity walkers 

TIMINGS            10.00am start and approx 5.00pm finish. Two hours classroom training before heading outside for practical skills.

HILL SKILLS 2

Off-Path

Practical 1-day course that follows on from Hill Skills 1 for those who have some knowledge of map reading and can follow paths and tracks. For upcoming dates click here.

You will learn:

  • skills for walking in open country without clear paths

  • effective planning - terrain, hazards, timings, weather
  • how to use bearings on a compass

  • how to recognise large and small contour features

  • micro-navigation and attention to detail

SUITABLE FOR    Scottish Munros; wreck hunting on the moors; long distance paths in Scotland, Dartmoor or the Pennines

TIMINGS            10.00am start and approx 5.00pm finish. 1 hour classroom training before heading outside for practical skills.

HILL SKILLS 3

Night Navigation

Four hour course which starts early evening, for those who have attended Hill Skills 1 & 2 or have a similar level of navigation experience. For upcoming dates click here.

You will learn:

  • bearing and pacing skills on rough ground

  • recognising contour features in the dark

  • confidence in low visibility navigation, on or off path

SUITABLE FOR    Preparing or revising for ML Training; Ultra runners or long distance hikers out in all weathers or overnight

TIMINGS            6.00pm start and approx 10.00pm finish. All outside - come dressed for the weather.

HILL SKILLS 4

Winter Skills

Practical 2-day course that follows on from Hill Skills 2 for those who want to add the fun of the white stuff and learn about the tools required. Kit hire available. For upcoming dates click here.

You will learn:

  • navigation on snow-covered terrain

  • confident footwork with winter boots

  • how to use crampons and an ice-axe

  • planning using simple winter meteorology and avalanche awareness

  • technical kit information and how to keep warm and safe in bad conditions

SUITABLE FOR    Winter walking in Scotland, The Lakes, North Pennines or Snowdonia

TIMINGS            10.00am start and approx 5.00pm finish. Some classroom training each morning. Optional evening meal together.

Winter Refresher

Practical 2-day course designed for those who have done a skills course in the past, but would like support to regain confidence. You'll plan hill days with other participants, with guidance and mentoring form an instructor. Kit hire available. For upcoming dates click here.

You will refresh:

  • planning skills with weather and avalanche forecasts

  • navigation on snow-covered terrain, and assessing ground as you travel

  • confident footwork with winter boots and crampons

  • getting the most from your ice-axe

TIMINGS            10.00am start and approx 5.00pm finish. Some classroom training each morning. Optional evening meal together.

Advanced Winter Skills

One day practical course venturing on to steeper winter slopes and focusing on more technical winter navigation. For upcoming dates click here.

You will learn:

  • navigation in difficult conditions with few features

  • confidence on steeper terrain 

  • the introduction of a rope for simple safeguarding skills

  • emergency shelters

SUITABLE FOR    winter walkers venturing in to more remote areas; Scottish Munro Baggers out in winter; those walking with friends
